CCTV has become more and more popular within the domestic market in recent years. This page goes through a few reasons why:
The DVR (Digital Video Recorder) is the central device that records all the footage from CCTV cameras. DVRs have built in hard drives which hold the footage, usually starting at 1 Tb as the smallest and expanding up to 6Tb and above. Once the hard drive is full the DVR will start to record over recorded footage from the earliest point. Essentially, once the hard drive is full it will always be full, with oldest footage constantly being overwritten with new.
One of the most common question we get from home owners regarding CCTV is "how long will the DVR record for?". There are various methods of getting longer recording times out of a DVR, but each method will reduce the quality of recording. Our reply to the question is "how long would you like it to record for?" or "what is the longest period you are ever away from your home?".
The most common answer for being away from home is 2 weeks. In this case we would advise to set the DVR up to record at it's best quality allowing 16-17 days recording.
The number of cameras that can be added to the system is dependent on the number of recording channels on the DVR. Usually 4 channels is the minimum.
A digital video recorder and network video recorder are essentially the same thing. Analogue cameras will be connected individually with their own cable to each channel input of the DVR. Digital I.P. (usually HD) cameras can connect to the local area network (Ethernet network) along with computers, printers, set-top boxes etc - when the NVR is connected to the network, it will immediately be able to 'see' the cameras.
CCTV cameras have advanced so much in recent years, and continue to do so. We recommend the use of dome cameras as they offer more protection from vandalism and it can be hard to see where the dome is pointed. Domes are available with IR (Infra Red) LEDs to help night time viewing. Night time viewing is always in black and white, with day time being recorded in full colour.
